Cockroach Control in Brisbane Summer: A Home Guide

Cockroach numbers climb when Brisbane gets hot and wet. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries across the north become easy places for them to feed and breed. This guide explains why it happens and how to cut the problem down before a treatment.

Why summer is worse

Cockroaches thrive in warmth and moisture, and a Queensland summer provides plenty of both. Heavy rain also pushes them out of drains, gardens and stormwater systems and into homes looking for dry shelter.

If your home sits near a green space or a creek, you may notice more of them. One of our customers rang us after a sudden infestation in a sunroom close to a park, which shows how fast numbers can jump.

Signs of an infestation

Seeing one cockroach in daylight often means there are many more hiding. They prefer the dark, so a sighting during the day can mean their usual hiding spots are crowded.

Other signs include small dark droppings that look like pepper or coffee grounds, a musty smell in cupboards, and egg cases tucked behind appliances or in corners. Check under the sink, behind the fridge, around the dishwasher and inside the pantry.

Different species behave differently, and some prefer the kitchen while others live in drains, roof voids or garden areas. That is one reason an inspection matters. When we know which type you have, we can aim the treatment at the places they actually live and feed, instead of guessing.

What attracts them to your home

Food crumbs, grease on the stovetop, uncovered rubbish and pet food left out overnight all help them survive. Even a small leak under a sink gives them water.

Cardboard is another draw. Stacks of boxes and old newspapers offer shelter and a place to lay eggs. Moving boxes into plastic tubs with lids can remove one hiding option.

Steps you can take now

Wipe benches and the stovetop every night, store dry food in sealed containers and take the rubbish out daily. Fix dripping taps and pipes. Wash pet bowls at night rather than leaving food out.

Seal gaps around pipes, door frames and window frames where you can. Check the weather strip on external doors, including the garage and laundry. Clear leaf litter and clutter from around the base of the house.

Avoid spraying large amounts of store-bought product around your kitchen. It can scatter cockroaches into other rooms and make the infestation harder to trace.

How our treatment works

We start with an inspection to find the species, how widespread the problem is and what is drawing them in. You get a tailored treatment plan that explains what we will do, how long it takes and whether a follow-up is needed.

Our certified technicians use only Australian approved products. We give you clear instructions for before and after the visit, including how long to stay out of treated areas. Please follow the technician's advice for your home.

After the treatment we talk through ongoing prevention so the problem does not return. That can include sealing entry points, changing storage habits and fixing moisture problems.

Heavy infestations often need a mix of treatment methods. We explain which ones suit your property and what the plan covers. If you have young children, pets or someone in the home who is unwell, tell us when you book so we can plan around them.

Homes and businesses

Cockroaches are a problem for cafes, offices and shops as well as houses. If you run a business in Brendale, Aspley, Strathpine or nearby, call us to discuss a commercial inspection. You can see more on our cockroach control page.

Rain can flood their usual hiding places in drains and gardens, so they move into dry areas, including homes. Sealing gaps and keeping food and rubbish tidy helps.

How long should I stay out after a cockroach treatment?

It depends on the treatment. Our technician will tell you how long to stay out of treated areas and when it is safe to return, so follow that advice.
