Signs of Rats and Mice in the Roof: When to Act
Rats and mice often move into roof spaces unnoticed. Scratching at night, strange smells and droppings are common clues. This guide covers the signs we look for in homes across Brendale, Strathpine and Brisbane's north, and what to do next.
Sounds you might hear
Rodents are most active at night. Scratching, scurrying or gnawing noises above the ceiling after dark are the most common sign. Some people also hear squeaking or thumping.
Noises inside walls or near the kitchen can mean they are moving between the roof and other parts of the house. If you hear them in the morning or evening as well, the problem may be bigger.
Other signs to look for
Droppings are a clear sign. Mouse droppings are small and rice-like, while rat droppings are larger. Look for them in the pantry, under the sink, in the garage and inside the roof space if it is safe to look.
Gnaw marks on timber, wiring, plastic and food packaging suggest rodents are active. Greasy smear marks along walls, torn insulation and shredded nesting material are also common.
A musty or sharp smell can build up where rodents nest. Pets acting strangely near walls or the ceiling can also hint at activity.
If you find a dead rodent, wear gloves and seal it in a bag before putting it in the bin. Wash your hands afterward. Take care with any droppings and do not sweep them dry. Ask us if you want advice on how to handle the area.
Why they get into roofs
Rodents look for warmth, shelter and food. Roof spaces give them all three. They get in through small gaps around pipes, vents, eaves and damaged roof tiles.
Tree branches touching the roof provide a bridge. Fruit trees, compost, chicken feed, pet food and open bins close to the house can attract them too. Clearing fallen fruit and storing feed in sealed containers helps.
Check the outside of your home as well. Look for gaps around the garage door, holes where pipes enter the wall, and broken vents. Even a small opening can be enough for a mouse to squeeze through.
Why it should not wait
Rodents chew through wiring and insulation, and they can contaminate food and surfaces. Their numbers can build quickly. Acting early usually makes the problem easier to fix.
Please be careful when entering the roof space yourself. Wear protective gear, watch for loose wiring and do not step off the joists. If you are unsure, leave it to a professional.
Keep a note of when and where you notice noises or droppings. It gives our technician a clearer picture of how the rodents are moving through the property and where to focus.
What we do
Our qualified technicians inspect your property to find where rodents are getting in, how many there are and what is attracting them. You get a tailored plan covering the treatment, how long it will take and any follow-up.
We use safe and reliable rodent control methods and only Australian approved products. We also advise on proofing your home, such as sealing gaps and trimming branches back from the roof.
We service Brendale, Warner, Albany Creek, Eatons Hill, Murrumba Downs and surrounding suburbs. Our mouse and rat control page has more details, or call us.
We also treat businesses. Cafes, warehouses and workshops can have rodents travelling between stock, storage and wall cavities, and early action protects food and goods.
