Spider Control for Queensland Homes: Practical Tips
Spiders are a normal part of life in Queensland, but many people do not want them inside. Webs on eaves, in sheds and around windows are common in suburbs like Bracken Ridge, Carseldine and Albany Creek. This guide explains why they come in and what you can do.
Why spiders move in
Spiders follow their food. Other insects gather around outdoor lights, so spiders build webs nearby. If you have a lot of insects, you will probably see more spiders too.
They also look for quiet, undisturbed places. Garages, sheds, behind furniture, under stairs and inside boxes all suit them. Warm weather and rain can push them toward the house.
Common hiding spots
Check around windows, door frames, eaves, letterboxes, garden furniture and outdoor lights. Inside, look in corners of ceilings, behind curtains and under beds.
Garages and sheds often have the most. Shoes, gloves and clothing left on the floor can hide a spider. Shake them out before wearing them, especially if they have been stored outside.
Egg sacs are another thing to look out for. They can look like small silky balls in corners, under eaves or on the underside of outdoor furniture. Removing them early stops numbers from building up.
Reducing spiders around the house
Cut down on the insects that feed them. Switch outdoor lights off when you do not need them, or use lights that attract fewer insects. Close the gaps around doors and windows, and repair damaged flyscreens.
Keep gardens tidy near the house. Trim shrubs and vines that touch walls, clear leaf litter and move woodpiles, pots and stored items away from the building.
Inside, vacuum corners, cupboards and under furniture often. Store items in sealed plastic tubs instead of open cardboard boxes. Regular dusting and clearing of webs will make it clear whether new ones are appearing.
Outdoor lighting changes are a simple step. Warm-coloured globes tend to draw fewer insects than bright white ones. Moving lights away from doors and windows also keeps insects, and the spiders that follow them, further from the entry points.
Safety around spiders
Wear gloves when working in sheds, garages or the garden. Avoid putting your hands into dark spaces or stacked materials without looking first.
If someone is bitten and you are worried, seek advice from a medical professional or call emergency services. We cannot give medical advice.
Children can be curious about webs and spiders. Teach them to leave unknown spiders alone and to tell an adult. Keep gardening gloves and boots in a sealed bag or tub so nothing moves into them between uses.
How we help
Spiders are on our list of pests we treat as part of our general pest control service. Our technician inspects your property, works out where spiders are getting in and what is drawing them, and builds a plan for your home or business.

We service homes and businesses in Brendale, Strathpine, Bald Hills, Warner, Aspley and across Brisbane's north. Visit our general pest control page to learn more, or call us.
If you run a business, such as a shop, a workshop or a storage yard, spiders in stock rooms and loading areas can be a problem for staff and customers. We can inspect commercial properties too.
